When we met my partner already had a dog, so when we moved-in together the pooch came too. Dog is a bullmastiff bitch (now age 7) and although she's gentle, obediant and great with people she hates other dogs and will attack them if not controlled. I'm not a dog person, I adore cats and would so much love to have a kittie once again. But I'm wary of doing so because of the dog. My partner seems to think that if we got a kitten, doggie would accept it and (realising it was just a baby) and would possibly 'mother' it. Maybe he's right but I'm not prepared to take chances. If I got a kitten and the dog harmed it in any way whatsoever I'd never be able to forgive myself (much less my partner and his dog). What advice can you give me?

I don't know much about dogs but i don't think she will realise the kitten is a baby and mother it . She's got a problem with other dogs already and may well also have a problem with cats, even baby ones, to her i imagine she'll just see it as a small animal and would treat it the same as she would a grown up cat, which may well be the same way she reacts to dogs. The only advice i could give is maybe look into behaviour training for the dog to socialise her so she does not see other dogs as a threat. Although given her age maybe it's too late. I think it's far too much of a risk to get a cat or kitten the way she is just now.

I have to agree with Cheryl. If the dog had been brought up with cats it would be different, and Mastiffs have a high prey drive she would more likely kill a cat that was introduced to her at this age. My dog is a Husky/Lakeland terrier X and both breeds are known to chase and kill cats, but I got him at six weeks and the cats were already here. He still has that prey drive and territorial instinct though when a strange cats comes in the garden.... Its a good job theyre faster than him!

Well, looks like I'd better forget about having a cat until the dog heads off to the Happy Hunting Ground! I'm not prepared to take any risks. Thank you so very much for your advice, it's appreciated.
